There are two types of common biochemical filter materials. One is the ceramic ring-type represented by the ceramic ring, including glass rings and ceramic beads. It is characterized by obvious microporous structure, relatively hard texture,and heavyweight; in addition, it is a biochemical ball, including various sizes of biochemical balls and biochemical blocks. It is mainly made of plastic materials and has complicated grooves on the surface, which is light in weight.


Working principle of ceramic ring
Ceramic ring filter material is a traditional biochemical filter material. Its honeycomb microporous structure greatly increases the surface area of the filter material. These surface areas serve as a hotbed for nitrifying bacteria to attach and can accumulate large numbers of colonies. However, the ceramic ring-type filter material itself does not have the ability to supply oxygen to the nitrifying bacteria, and it needs to be supplemented with water explosion oxygen to provide a good environment for the work of the nitrifying bacteria.



How the biochemical ball works
The surface of the biochemical ball has a complicated groove texture. When the water droplets flow through the surface of the biochemical ball, the water droplets will change direction along the groove, enter the groove of the next biochemical ball, and change the direction again. Therefore, the flow of water droplets through the biochemical ball pile will be greatly lengthened, so that the action time of the nitrifying bacteria is also increased. But when it is a large number of water flows, the effect of the channel will not be obvious. In fact, the biochemical ball itself is designed for trickle flow.


Comparison
Many people say that the filtering effect of the glass ring is too poor, the pores inside the glass ring are too fine, although the capillary holes can be immersed in water, due to the tension of the water, the flow of water in the pores is basically very slow, and it is easy to block. In this way, the nitrifying bacteria group of the glass ring only adheres to the surface, and basically the nitrifying bacteria cannot survive deep inside.

On the contrary, many people think that the biochemical ball is very reliable. The main component in the biofilm itself can provide protection and food for nitrifying bacteria. A large amount of brown mucus we see in the biochemical ball is the biofilm. The biochemical ball uses the biofilm attached to the surface to provide a large number of nutrients and a good living environment for the nitrifying bacteria.
